Truck-Mounted Drilling Rigs and Complementary Equipment

ETTL's fleet of subsurface exploratory equipment includes five versatile truck-mounted drilling rigs, all described below, plus a Geoprobe push-probe unit, and two Track-Mounted Drilling Rigs.

1. 1996 Mobile B-5500 Drilling Rig: ETTL's most powerful truck-mounted unit, shown at right, is mounted on a 1995 Ford diesel tandem-axle truck. Called "Big Red" by ETTL's drilling staff, the B-5500 is a multi-purpose top-drive drill designed to quickly convert from augering to mud rotary, air or water coring, or downhole percussion air hammer. The long stroke mast makes it easy to use a simultaneous casing system or add a casing hammer. It has an auger capacity up to 18-inch diameter and rotary capacity to 24-inch hole diameter. The dual-speed top head drive delivers 14,000 ft-lbs for hollow stem auger drilling and up to 700 rpm for coring. On-board equipment includes a hydraulic driven 5" X 6" mud pump, air compressor, Moyno grout pump, and water tank.

2. Mobile B-61 HDX Drilling Rig (see unit at right). Mounted on a diesel engine, tandem-axle truck. Supplies 20,000 ft-lbs maximum spindle torque. Provides auger drilling up to 375 feet. Wire line retrieval system allows continuous sampling of soils in 5-ft intervals to depth of 300 ft. Capabilities permit use of hollow-stem augers from 3-1/4" ID to 6-5/8" ID (10" OD). Equipped with an SPT automatic hammer (meets ASTM D-1586-64), hydraulic leveling jacks, grout pump, Moyno pump, 200-gallon water tank, and a 42" hydraulically operated extruder that will extrude a 3" OD undisturbed Shelby tube sample.

3. Mobile B-61 HD Drilling Rig: Mounted on a diesel engine, tandem-axle truck. Supplies 20,000 ft-lbs maximum spindle torque. Equipped with a 3L8 Moyno pump, extruder, and automatic sample hammer that also converts to 170-lb TxDOT hammer. Capable of hollow stem auger drilling as well as mud rotary drilling. Equipped with an SPT automatic hammer (meets ASTM D-1586-64), hydraulic leveling jacks, grout pump, 200-gallon water tank, and a 42" hydraulically operated extruder that will extrude a 3" OD undisturbed Shelby tube sample.

4.
Gardner Denver 500 Rotary Drilling Rig, which is equipped with a 5"X 6" mud pump. a 427 cfm air compressor, a Venturi injection system, a 42" extruder for Shelby tube sampling, and hydraulic leveling jacks. It can drill by rotary wash or air.

All of the above four truck-mounted drilling units can be used for installation of 2" and 4" diameter monitoring wells, as well as 2" diameter piezometers. All of them can do coring of heavily consolidated soil and rock, as well as pitcher barrel sampling of loose, unconsolidated soil. And all are equipped with automatic hammers.

5. ETTL's fifth truck-mounted drilling rig, the Diedrich D-25 ( shown at right) is the latest addition to ETTL's drilling fleet. A small, lightweight, but powerful rig, it is mounted on a new C4500 GMC 2-ton truck. An all-purpose unit, it will be used primarily for geotechnical drilling projects carried out for clients served by ETTL's Longview and Texarkana branches. The D-25 is capable of maximum spindle torques in the 2,500 to 3,000 ft-lb range. All components are sized to withstand torque and axial loads encountered under most drilling conditions. Rated for 3-1/4" ID hollow stem auger to 50 ft (16m) depth, the D-25 passes the standard penetration test of 50-100 ft, and is rated to 150 linear feet of core drilling using N series tools. It provides an up thrust of 9800 lbs, and a down thrust of 7300 lbs.

Again, ETTL's fleet includes a Geoprobe push-probe unit, and two Track-Mounted Drilling Rigs.

Complementary Equipment

In addition to its truck-mounted drilling rigs, ETTL's fleet includes a truck-mounted
high-capacity grouting unit, as well as two truck-mounted water tanks
(1100- and 800-gallon capacity), and a variety of other mobile support vehicles.
